How mobile mechanics normally break the money down

A mobile mechanic's invoice is usually a call-out and diagnostic charge, labour by the hour, and parts fitted with their warranty stated. Keeping those apart is what stops the customer asking what the total covered.

Step by step

  1. 1Record the vehicle: make, model, registration and mileage. Without it the invoice is nearly worthless as a service record.
  2. 2Show call-out and diagnostics separately from repair labour — you did real work even if the fix was quick.
  3. 3Bill labour in hours against the job, and name the job: front discs and pads, cambelt, alternator.
  4. 4List parts with the brand where it matters, and state the parts warranty in months or miles.
  5. 5Note anything you advised but did not do — worn tyres, a weeping hose — so it is on record for next time.

When to send it

On completion, on the driveway, before you leave. Card or transfer on the spot is normal in this trade.

You have already fitted the parts, so payment on completion is the only sensible default. For fleet or trade customers, agree 30 days and a purchase order up front.

Common questions

What vehicle details should be on a mechanic's invoice?
Make, model, registration and mileage at the time of work. It turns the invoice into a service record the owner can show a future buyer.
Should diagnostics be charged if the repair goes ahead?
That is your call, but say which on the invoice. Many mechanics show the diagnostic charge and then discount it when the repair is booked — visibly, as a line.
How long should a parts warranty be?
Twelve months or 12,000 miles is the usual standard for fitted parts. Put it on the invoice so there is no argument if the part fails.
