How to invoice as a handyman (UK)

Invoicing as a handyman is mostly about how you break the money down. Get that right and customers pay without a phone call. Here is the order that works, why each part matters, and the wording to use.

How handymen normally break the money down

A handyman's invoice is usually a half-day or hourly rate covering the visit, then each separate task listed underneath, then fixings and sundries. Keeping those apart is what stops the customer asking what the total covered.

Step by step

  1. 1List every task you actually did as its own line. A single "work carried out" total is the fastest way to get an invoice queried.
  2. 2Show your half-day or hourly rate as the base line so the customer can see what the visit itself costs.
  3. 3Where a task took longer than a normal visit, say why in the description — a seized bolt, hidden rot, a second trip for parts.
  4. 4Group small fixings, sealant and sundries into one materials line rather than pricing individual screws.
  5. 5Offer a snagging window in the notes. It costs you almost nothing and it visibly reduces payment friction.

When to send it

On the day for a single visit. For a punch-list spread over several days, one invoice at the end listing every task is easier for the customer than a trickle.

Most handyman invoices are small and paid within days. If one goes past 14 days, a text on site the next time you are nearby usually settles it.

Common questions

Should a handyman invoice list every job separately?
Yes. Handyman visits cover several unrelated tasks, and a one-line total invites the question "what did that cover?" — which delays payment.
Is it better to charge hourly or by the half day?
Half days suit lists of small jobs and protect you from travel time eating the margin. Hourly suits a single defined task where the scope is obvious.
How do I charge for a second trip to buy parts?
Either build it into the visit rate or show it as its own short labour line with the reason. What you must not do is hide it inside the materials price.
